Pull ups at night?!?!?!?

>> Saturday, January 8, 2011

Ok, I am seriously at my wits end over this issue, and I just don't know what to do anymore. My son is 7 years old, and still needs to wear a pull up at night. He is such a sound sleeper that he just can not wake up when he needs to go to the bathroom. We have tried not letting him have anything to eat or drink after 7pm, but that did not work at all. He is so ashamed that he refuses to even try to sleep without wearing one now. Should I just leave the issue alone and see if he will outgrow the problem? Or should I continue trying to make him sleep without wearing one? My daughter was completely toilet trained at the age of 3, and that was 11 years ago. This is unfamiliar territory to me, but I have heard that boys can be more difficult to toilet train than girls. Maybe there is some truth to that statement. Does anyone have any suggestions that I could try? I would greatly appreciate any help that I can get. :)

"You work from home? How did you start that?"

If you own your own business, and work from home, then chances are you are all too familiar with this question. Inquiring minds wondering how it is that you are able to "work" from home, while they are left to slave away at their mundane 8-5 office jobs. Some look at you with envy in their eyes, while others ooze contempt from their pores. Still others feel nothing but pity for you, because after all, you do work from home, so you can't really be making money, right? Well, that depends on who you are, what you do, and how you have your business set up.

I started my business several years ago, after my son was born. I was scouring Ebay for the latest and greatest baby shower favors, when I came across something I had never heard of before. Candy wrappers. My nursery theme at the time was Blue Jean Teddy, and I happened across a listing for the most adorable Blue Jean Teddy miniature candy wrappers. So, I bought them, and waited anxiously for them to arrive. A week later, I was ripping open the package with wide eyed anticipation, and... WTF!?!?!?! My simply adorable in the Ebay picture candy wrappers were nothing more than tiny pieces of plain white copy paper, with smeared text and a horribly faded, tiny picture of Blue Jean Teddy. Being pressed for time, I had no choice but to use them at my shower, and everyone thought they were adorable. Well, if this was adorable, then imagine what people would think when I started selling my own creations.

Determined that I could do a much better job, I set out to learn this paper craft. I found an online school that taught me the basics, including the dimensions necessary to wrap most of the most popular brands of candy. I bought a new ink jet printer, and experimented with different paper types. My hubby is a pressman at a professional print shop, so he had access to many different types of paper, all at significantly less than I would pay on my own. I slowly developed my craft, and after a couple of years, I was ready to sell to the masses. I opened an Ebay store, and a website, and began selling my candy wrappers to the public. For the first several years, my new business was just a hobby. I barely made enough extra money for dinner and a movie each month, but I never gave up. Eventually, I discovered the art of SEO, and PPC advertising, and the rest is history.

I have learned a lot since my meager beginnings, and I am proud of what I have built over the years. I now make a full time income from my business, and no longer work a regular job on the side. I have expanded my product line to include invitations, scratch off tickets, personalized paint cans, thank you notes, water bottle labels, nugget labels, and so much more. I offer both printed and e-mailed designs, in most of the popular characters and themes of the time.

I love what I do, and it is more demanding than any 8-5 office job. I no longer have the luxury of leaving work at the office, because my office time and my personal time are now intermingled. I work long hours, sometimes 12 hours a day, and still make time to do all those mom duties; cooking, cleaning, laundry, homework, etc, etc, etc. I will do light work on Saturdays, but Sundays are off limits. This is my family time, and I do not allow myself to work my business this day. I also do my best to leave my evenings free for family time.

It bothers me that some people see what I do as a walk in the park. The phrase "Oh she can do it, she doesn't work" makes me want to scream. I do work. In fact, I probably do more work in one day than many of these people do in a week. I am the designer, webmaster, shipping/receiving clerk, bookkeeper, customer service, person who orders supplies, and every other person that a typical business would employ. I am all of this every day, and I am also a wife and mother on top of it all. Just because we work from home does not mean that we do not work. It simply means that we have achieved one of our dreams.

Poop There It Is!!

Ok, I just have to share this. I'm sure most of you have seen the new Luvs Diaper commercial, but if you haven't, you really should check it out. This commercial is hilarious; I laugh every time I see it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALyARRKQ4Lg
I know, you're first impression will most likely be EEEWWWWW, but really, it is hilarious when you look at the creativity that went into it. The cell phones taking pictures, the Dancing With The Stars style judging, (with a little American Idol Simon like judge on the end), and let's not forget, using a wildly popular song from the 90's, with one minor change.... POOP There it Is!! This is my favorite commercial on tv right now.
Do you have a favorite commercial? If so, please share it with me.

Oops, sorry about that...

>> Thursday, January 6, 2011

I'm running late, in desperate need of coffee, and the line isn't moving. No, I'm not stuck in traffic on a busy highway, I'm stuck in the drive thru hell at McDonald's. At long last, I reach the order screen. No, I do not want to try your oatmeal, and yes everything is correct on the screen (seriously, have we gotten that lazy?). I pull around to the 1st window to pay, hand over my $5.00, and hold my hand out to receive my nickel in change. And then it happens. Apparently the nickel was coated in hash brown grease because it has slid right out of the employee's hand and onto the ground. The employee makes a half-hearted attempt to reach my nickel, but his attempt only results in intense laughter from the passenger in the car behind me. So, his response the the awkward situation is to laugh it off with an unfeeling "Oops, sorry about that." At this point, it is clear to me that I have two options. Climb out of my truck and retrieve my nickel, or just let it go. Since there was not enough room to open my truck door to take advantage of option one, I reluctantly drove off without my bright, shiny, silver nickel. I know, I know it's only a nickel, but I just can't let it go...

Did you know that there are 12,804 McDonald's restaurants in the US alone? Neither did I. Now, play along with me here, I promise there is a method to my madness. Now, I know that in the course of one day, I am not the only customer who's change was so wrongly neglected. So, let's say three people at one McDonald's lose a nickel, so that's $0.15 at one restaurant in one day. Big deal? Nah, not really. Now, say that three customers at every McDonald's across America loses a nickel, so let's see that brings us up to $0.15 x 12,804 that's $1,920.60 in lost change IN ONE DAY!!! Now, multiply that amount by 365 days in a year... Are you ready? That's a whopping $701,019 in lost change!!! Big deal yet? And that's just taking the nickel into consideration. What about dimes, and quarters? What amount is worth delaying the line a few seconds to retrieve?

So what is the point you ask? Simple. Where did all that lost change go? During my youth, I spent 7 years working in the fast food industry, and I worked the drive thru window quite frequently. This was back in the day when employees had to count change in their heads, and there was only one window. If I dropped a customer's change, I apologized, and promptly replaced the dropped change with change from the register. When the rush was over, someone was sent outside to retrieve any change that we dropped, and it was put back into the register. Sure we missed a few cents here and there that were picked up by people walking by, but that rarely happened. Nowadays, there is a change machine at the drive thru window, and it dispenses the exact change, no thinking required. The problem is, that's it. The drawer does not reopen until the next customer pulls up, so if the change is dropped, then you are left with an "Oops, sorry about that." Try spending that at Walmart.

So, what becomes of this $701,019 in lost change every year? Is it left on the ground for a passer by to pick up? Or is it recovered by a McDonald's employee and given back to the company to help boost their $4.31 billion in net income?

And now you have been given a sneak peek into my mind. Are you scared yet?

Welcome to my blog

Hello, and welcome to the inaugural post of my new blog. I am so glad you have found my little corner of internet heaven, and I hope you will enjoy the exciting things I have planned for my little soapbox.

I am 34 years old (had to think about that for a second. After 20, I stopped paying attention) in my 9th year of wedded bliss, and have 2 children, a darling 7 year old son, and a darling (when she's sleeping) almost 14 year old daughter. I own my own business, so I am considered a WAHM, but that title just seems silly to me. If you are a mom, then you are always working. There is always laundry waiting to be washed, dishes piled up in the sink, bills to pay, a child to drive here there and yonder, meals to prepare, homework to help with, animals to take care of, fights to referee, broken hearts to mend, and on and on... So in my opinion, if you are a mom, then you are a WAHM.

My plans for this blog are simple. I need a place to talk about my day to day experiences on this fantastic journey I call life. But, my ramblings need to have a purpose, otherwise, who would want to listen? So, I plan to give back to you, my wonderful readers, by posting family favorite recipes (let's face it, we always need to shake it up a bit on the kitchen), helping you find answers to life's little questions, posting tips to help with everyday tasks, and so muc more. So, please come back as often as you wish, and let me know how things are going in your world.
